Open Championship or British Open Golf, as is known outside the boundaries of the United Kingdom is considered to be the oldest among the four major PGA of golf tournaments. The Beginning of the Tournament

The very first championship tournament was held in Ayrshire, Scotland and dates back to the year 1860 in which only eight Scottish players participated. They contested on three rounds on the 12 – hole Prestwick course. The winner of the tournament was Willie Park Sr. by scoring a total of 174 points and won a belt made up of red leather with fancies of silver on it. This belt was replaced by a Claret Jug as the trophy of the tournament in the year 1870 however, for the last few years; the Championship belt retrieved its position as the award for the winner. The first champion to win this trophy was Young Tom Morris. Moreover, the first tournament did not award any cash money for the winner however, in 1863; a cash prize of 10 U.K pounds was awarded to the players held in second and third position whereas, the winner received a cheque of higher amount.
