British Open Golf Sydney Australia


Open Championship or British Open Golf, as is known outside the boundaries of the United Kingdom is considered to be the oldest among the four major PGA of golf tournaments. Many people also name it to be The World Open as it welcome golf players from across the world. This is the only Golf Tournament that is not being played in the United States. 


The Beginning of the Tournament



The very first championship tournament was held in Ayrshire, Scotland and dates back to the year 1860 in which only eight Scottish players participated. They contested on three rounds on the 12 – hole Prestwick course. The winner of the tournament was Willie Park Sr. by scoring a total of 174 points and won a belt made up of red leather with fancies of silver on it. This belt was replaced by a Claret Jug as the trophy of the tournament in the year 1870 however, for the last few years; the Championship belt retrieved its position as the award for the winner. The first champion to win this trophy was Young Tom Morris. Moreover, the first tournament did not award any cash money for the winner however, in 1863; a cash prize of 10 U.K pounds was awarded to the players held in second and third position whereas, the winner received a cheque of higher amount. In addition to this a gold medal is also being honored to the winner. 



Courses



The Championship Tournament was held in Scotland till the year 1984 after which a series of tournaments was being held in different courses of England. Presently, the golf courses of Britain are its main arenas. The courses in Scotland comprise of Carnoustie, Muirfield, St. Andrews, Turnberry and Royal Troon. England courses include Lytham, Liverpool, Birkdale and St. George’s. 



Time Frame



The British Open Golf is being held once every year with the exception of three time frames. These events occurred in the year 1871 where there aroused a controversy on the administration of the entire event, in the years 1915 – 1919 in which World War I took place and in the years 1940 – 1945 due to World War II.



Notable Champions



The Championship Tournament has been won by a number of notable golf players which includes Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Peter Thompson, Bobby Locke, Tom Watson, Young Tom Morris and Sam Snead.
